I’m a firm believer that a healthy relationship with food extends beyond simply eating the ‘right’ things. It has taken me time to get here. Trust me, I know what it’s like to feel obsessive about food.

I struggled with my own relationship with food during college. Excessively preoccupied with what I was eating under the guise of ‘wellness'‘, I imposed strict food rules on myself and became hyper-focused on always making the ‘healthiest’ possible choice. Meanwhile, I was stressed out and unhappy.

After graduation, my interest in health led me to work as a writer at Health (the magazine). While there, I interviewed countless dietitians and wrote story after story about how diet can impact both our physical and emotional well-being. The more I spoke with these experts, the more I desired to help people the same way they did.

So, I left journalism to become a registered dietitian and pursue a master’s degree in clinical nutrition. This experience — which included everything from organic chemistry courses and volunteering in schools to completing a dietetic internship in a hospital — fundamentally shifted my understanding of nutrition.

Yes, I learned how to calculate macros and provide tube feeds. But gaining a deeper understanding of the science of nutrition also opened my eyes to how much more there is to food than just numbers and nutrition facts. Now when I work with clients, I aim to emphasize how balanced eating is a form of self care, not punishment. How a healthy relationship with food should allow us to connect deeper to ourselves and to others, not isolate us. And most of all, how food should ideally keep us calm and well-fueled, rather than stressed and restricted.

My mission at ALIVE+WELL Nutrition is to help you learn all of this too, and to put it into practice — for good.
